Her father was a grandson of a prominent revolutionary, and her mother came from the town of Lyubimets. Georgieva graduated from the "St. Sedmochislenitsi" Secondary School in Sofia.
She pursued higher education at the Karl Marx Institute of Political Economy and Sociology (now the University of National and World Economy in Sofia), graduating in 1976 with a degree in Political Economy and Sociology.
In 1986, she earned her doctorate in "Environmental Policy and Economic Growth in the US."
