‘Little Bear’ author creates in Calabash
CALABASH | Else Holmelund Minarik lives quietly on the edge of what she calls Frog Heaven in Brunswick County.
Sitting at a long antique harvest table facing a window wall overlooking the marsh, she writes books in longhand – as she always has.
The reason, she says with a quick smile: “I never learned to type.”
That clearly hasn’t held back the author of Little Bear, her first book and the one that launched the I Can Read children’s series known around the world.
She wrote a series of five books about Little Bear between and , and at the age of 85 has just signed a new contract with Harper & Row, publisher of her first book.
Maurice Sendak illustrated the first five Little Bear books and went on to fame with his own books, including Where the Wild Things Are.
Because of health problems, he is unable to illustrate the latest Little Bear, she said.
